Why Career Discovery Should Start in Grade 9 — Not Grade 12

Choosing a career is one of the biggest decisions a student will make. Yet, many students begin thinking seriously about careers only when they reach Grade 11 or 12.

By then, subject choices have already been made, college applications are approaching, and there is little time to explore different possibilities.

Career discovery should start earlier.

Grades 9 and 10 are an ideal time for students to understand themselves — their interests, strengths, personality, skills and areas they enjoy learning about.

Career discovery at this stage is not about deciding one career for life. It is about exploring possibilities.

A student interested in technology, for example, could explore coding, robotics, data, design or entrepreneurship before deciding which direction feels right.

Similarly, a student interested in biology could explore medicine, biotechnology, psychology, environmental science, nutrition or other related fields.

What can students do from Grade 9?

  • Understand their strengths and interests
  • Explore different careers
  • Speak to professionals
  • Participate in competitions
  • Take part in workshops
  • Try projects and experiments
  • Develop communication and leadership skills
  • Explore internships and observerships
  • Build awareness of different university pathways
The earlier students explore, the more informed their decisions can become.

Career discovery is a journey

There is no need for a 14-year-old to have their entire future figured out.

What matters is creating opportunities to discover, explore, reflect and evolve.

That is the philosophy behind the YOUniverse School Program (YSP) — helping students begin their career journey early and develop a clearer understanding of themselves and the world of opportunities around them.
