Academic performance is important. But today’s students have opportunities to demonstrate much more than their marks.
A student’s interests, initiative, skills, experiences and achievements can provide a broader picture of who they are.
What is a student profile?
A student profile can include:
-
- Academic performance
- Interests and strengths
- Projects
- Competitions
- Leadership experiences
- Volunteering
- Internships
- Research or independent learning
- Sports and extracurricular activities
- Entrepreneurship initiatives
- Public speaking
- Creative work
- Community involvement
The goal isn’t to collect certificates.
Quality matters more than quantity.
Participating in 20 unrelated competitions simply to add them to a resume is very different from developing a genuine interest and building meaningful experiences around it.
For example, a student interested in sustainability might:
Explore → Research → Build a project → Participate in a competition → Work with an organisation → Document the experience
That creates a much more meaningful story.
Start early
Students in Grades 9–12 have several years to explore different areas and gradually develop their strengths.
The objective should be to help students discover:
-
- What am I good at?
- What do I enjoy?
- What problems do I care about?
- What skills do I want to develop?
- Where could these interests lead me?
YSP encourages students to look beyond marks and build a profile that reflects their individual journey, interests and potential.
