Why Experiential Learning Matters for High School Students

Students spend years learning concepts from textbooks.

But some of the most valuable learning happens when they get an opportunity to apply what they know.

That’s experiential learning.

Instead of simply learning about entrepreneurship, a student could develop a business idea.

Instead of reading about sustainability, they could work on an environmental project.

Instead of studying public speaking, they could participate in a debate or Model United Nations.

Instead of learning about AI only theoretically, they could explore how AI is being used to solve real-world problems.

Experiential learning helps students develop skills such as:

    • Communication
    • Problem-solving
    • Creativity
    • Collaboration
    • Leadership
    • Critical thinking
    • Adaptability
    • Research
    • Decision-making

It also gives students something incredibly valuable:

The opportunity to discover what they enjoy.

A student may think they want to become an engineer until they work on a robotics project and discover that they are actually more interested in product design.

Another may discover a passion for entrepreneurship through a business challenge.

These experiences can help students make more informed choices later.

YSP incorporates experiential learning into the student journey through workshops, projects, competitions, industry exposure and other opportunities.
